Majority back charging Trump for inciting Capitol violence: Poll

A majority of Americans believe US President Donald Trump should be charged with inciting violence at the Capitol last week, according to a new poll. The Washington Post-ABC News poll, released on Friday, found that 56 percent said Trump should be removed from office and not allowed to run again. Some 89 percent Democrats said Trump should be removed from office and barred from running for the White House again, while 85 percent of Republicans said he should not be disqualified for running for office again. On January 6, Trump supporters launched a deadly assault on the US Capitol, disrupting briefly the certification of the November election results. Five people were killed in the siege.Trump was impeached for the second time on Wednesday under the charge of incitement of an insurrection. The Senate will not vote on impeachment until after President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. The Senate, already out of session, will recess on Jan. 19 and the earliest day it could begin the impeachment process would be either on Jan. 20, the day President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in, or Jan. 21, the day after he is sworn in.It would take a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate to impeach Trump which is unlikely as Democrats do not have the required numbers. In the poll, only 18 percent of Republicans said they believed the party should distance itself from Trump’s leadership. About 76 percent said the party should continue to follow Trump’s leadership. The poll was conducted between Jan. 10 and Jan. 13 and talked to 1,002 adults across the US.
