Hyderabad: The State capital has once again surged ahead of other metro cities in the country, including Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, when it comes to keeping its citizens happy. That is what the latest Swachh Survekshan 2020 rankings reveal.

According to the rankings, which were released by the Central government on Thursday, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has been awarded the No.1 rank in the “Best Mega City in Citizen Feedback” (above 40 lakh population) category while the capital’s civic body also bettered its last year’s ranking to be positioned at 23rd in the ‘Above 10 lakh population’ category for overall performance, again beating other metros such as Greater Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and the North and South Delhi Metro Cities.

The GHMC has also been appreciated for implementation of different innovations and practices, including its Green Kiosks, India’s first exclusive Dog Park, twin bins made from recycled plastic and also the Feed the Need initiative.

The ‘Swachh Survekshan – 2020’ campaign provides ranking of cities, separately for one lakh or more population (national ranking) and those below one lakh (State and zonal rankings). It is based on an assessment of progress from January 2019 till December 2019 under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) covering 4,384 cities.

“Happy to share this year GHMC bagged the Best Mega city in Citizens feedback in above 40 lakh population. Also we are in 23 position in Swachh Survekshan rankings as against 35 in 2019.” (sic) tweeted Mayor Bonthu Rammohan, adding that efforts would be intensified to improve the performance further next year.
