Indefinite Auto strike in city from Feb. 14

Hyderabad: Autorickshaws in the twin cities would be off the road from February 14 indefinitely in protest against the alleged “RTA and Police Harassment” and for immediate settlement of auto drivers’ reasonable demands.

Announcing this here today, Telangana Auto Drivers JAC convener Mohd Amanullah Khan alleged that the police and RTA authorities were working against the policies and programs of the TRS government and harassing the auto drivers by seizing their autos indiscriminately on the pretext of irregularities. Amanullah reminded that the TRS party, in its manifesto, had promised auto drivers that there will be no police and RTA harassment of auto drivers if the party came to power. Besides, party supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao had also assured the auto drivers during election meetings that transport DLS and badges will be issued to drivers to drive autos without VIII class pass condition. But the police and RTA authorities, instead of implementing the Chief Minister’s assurance, they were imposing heavy penalties up to Rs 1,500 even as the drivers were possessing valid DLS to drive autos.

He also regretted that the Transport department has failed to concede the auto drivers long-pending demand to increase auto fares on par with the neighboring States.  He reminded that the existing auto fares were fixed by the then united AP Government about four years ago onFebruary 14 and that is why the auto drivers in the twin cities were not able to carry passengers as per the meter charges. He said the existing auto fares are not only ‘unfair’ but also not based on realities like high cost of vehicle operational expenses and high cost of living.

The TADJAC convener also said a novel “footwear protest” demonstration would be held on February 1 at Secunderabad RTA Zonal Office at 11 am demanding corruption-free RTA office and action against the corrupt RTO.
